Death is a subject we rarely speak of
Through the stories our customers share with us, we have come to understand how alone people so often feel in their grief. Friends and acquaintances frequently find themselves at a loss when someone close to them is mourning, and they quietly withdraw. This is not something we can hold against anyone, because in our society, death and grief have become almost taboo. Our mourning culture has shrunk considerably, and in some ways it has been lost altogether. A funeral is largely a series of tasks to be worked through, and without the vigils and rituals that once gave grief its space, the window between the day of death and the burial is simply too short to allow sorrow its proper room. Even the law grants us barely two days of compassionate leave when someone dear to us dies. Grief has very little place in a world that moves so relentlessly forward.
