It is genuinely heartening to see the conversation around death and grief moving out of the shadows. Social media, in particular, has become a space where new ideas can be shared, questions asked openly, and old silences broken. At one of our recent trade fairs, we had the privilege of meeting Maren Wolf, who brought with her a truly beautiful idea.
The Himmelsbote
The most wonderful ideas tend to arise from lived experience, from something you missed and had to create for yourself. That is exactly how the Himmelsboten came into being. When Maren's beloved grandmother passed away, she found herself searching for her own personal way to say goodbye. She did not want to throw earth or flowers into the grave, because that did not come close to holding the weight of her grief. And there was so much she still wanted to say. And so the first Himmelsbote was born, a small, lovingly designed grave offering with a tiny pocket inside for a personal message.
Words Spoken and Words That Were Never Said
At KEEPMOMENTS, we recognise deeply how much personal words matter. We preserve them ourselves, in handwritten engraving, set into jewellery that travels alongside you every day. The Himmelsboten hold something similar: the messages you still longed to say, now carried by a messenger toward the one who is gone.
Children are also included in this ritual. They can send their own messages through drawn pictures or written words, making the farewell something the whole family can shape together. The Himmelsboten were developed in close collaboration with undertakers, grief counsellors, grieving families, midwives, and hospice workers, which shows in the care woven into every detail. With designs to suit every age and personality, from the simplest to the most playful, they truly are for everyone who still has something left to say.
